Eye exams

A full look at your eyes, not just your prescription

A comprehensive exam checks how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. For patients with dry eyes, it includes a look at the tear film and the eyelids.

The visit takes about an hour. Your doctor explains what was found and what to do next, and you leave with your prescription if you need one.

At the visit

What happens

  1. 01

    Step 1: Your history

We ask about your eyes, your health, the medicines you take and how you use your eyes during the day.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Measuring your vision

The assistant measures how well you see and how your eyes focus.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Checking eye health

The doctor looks at the front and the back of each eye and checks the eye pressure.

  4. 04

    Step 4: What we found

The doctor tells you the results, writes the plan and gives you a copy of your prescription.

Planning your visit

How often, and what to bring

  • How often

Many adults have an exam every one to two years. The doctor sets a schedule that fits your eyes and your health.

  • What to bring

Your glasses, your contact lenses and case, a list of your medicines, and your insurance cards.

  • How it is billed

A routine exam goes to a vision plan. A visit for an eye problem goes to medical insurance. See how fees work.

About the exam

Is a dry eye evaluation the same as an eye exam?

No. An exam looks at vision and eye health in general. A dry eye evaluation adds the tear film and eyelid tests. Many patients have both on one visit, and the office explains how each part is billed.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Sometimes. The doctor tells you before and says whether you should have someone drive.

Can I get my prescription?

Yes. Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy after the exam, and you can fill it anywhere.
